TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES IN RIO
Public transport
There are a number of public transportation options in Rio de Janeiro, including city buses, executive buses (Frescão), the subway (metro), and even a ferry service.
Travelling by city bus is a very inexpensive and most convenient way to get around the South Zone (Zona Sul) of the city due to the high number and frequency of lines running through the area. There are designated bus lanes in most streets that make travel times shorter. One-way tickets are approximately €1.10 euros as of January 2015. Executive buses (Frescão) are more expensive (around €4.50 euros) and more comfortable.
Rio has a good subway service that serves a number of areas, from tourist areas to the downtown area (Centro). One-way tickets are approximately €1.15 euros. At Ipanema/General Osório station, you can take special subway-buses to Leblon, Gávea and Barra da Tijuca. At Botafogo station, you can take the subway-bus to Gávea, going through Jardim Botânico. In order to take these buses, you should mention, at the time of the subway ticket purchase, that you want to take the “Metro na superficie” (metro bus) and inform the vendor of your final destination. The vendor will give you a ticket to the subway-bus along with your subway ticket, no cost added (as long as you take the bus within two hours from the time you use your ticket at the metro station).

You will find a large number of taxis on the streets. However, people who are not well-acquainted with Rio may prefer to call a cab from a taxi company or to have a pre-reserve to pick them up as they arrive at (or leave for) the international airport.
Rio has an extensive taxi fleet, which includes yellow metered cabs that can be hailed on the streets, as well as several regular and special taxis operated by licensed companies, which can be found at airports and hotels or booked by phone. Virtually all taxis have air-conditioning at no additional cost.
While taxis are relatively cheap in Rio, special cabs are not – they may cost twice as much (or more) than regular cabs – but they are usually larger and more comfortable. Furthermore, as they operate on a flat rate basis, the passenger is able to avoid any incidents regarding the price of the ride.
Each travel bag (excluding personal bags) is charged an additional fee of approximately €0.60 euro cents. Between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., as well as on Sundays and holidays, taxis operate on “bandeira 2” (flag 2), which means that the taximeter will be automatically calibrated to charge about 20% more than regular rides.
Taxi drivers do not expect tips per se, but passengers are expected to round up the bill or pay a little more (e.g., 10%) if they are satisfied with the service.
Several internet apps also offer taxi services in Rio. Many of these firms operate in several other countries.
